The Bolgerijen and Autena polders form the largest inland dyke complex of pilot whales in the Netherlands. The alternation between pilot whales, hay and meadows and poplar forests makes the area extra special.
A griend is a willow plantation, also called an extensive willow coppice forest. Every three to four years, the willows are cut down to harvest the 'toes' (branches). During the winter months, the branches are cut close to the trunk, leaving small stumps. In spring, these sprout again. Willows are not only ecologically valuable, but also have important cultural-historical significance. Over the centuries, the flexible branches have been used for a variety of applications, such as making baskets, fencing, packaging material, hoops for barrels, bean poles and bank protection. They were also braided into mats to strengthen dykes. These nature reserves form the largest inland dyke grienden complex in the Netherlands.

Numerous plants and animals find their habitat in the willows. Burrowing birds, such as the little owl, nest in the often hollow trunks. On the willows, oak ferns and various species of moss thrive. In addition, the willows are a favourite place for insects. Birds, such as buzzards and kestrels, benefit from the abundance of food these trees provide.
