Fort Vreeswijk

Fort Vreeswijk was built around 1853 and is part of the Hollandse Waterlinie .

Located right next to the Lekdijk, Fort Vreeswijk has been a household name in Nieuwegein and far beyond for decades. Fort Vreeswijk has a rich history. Tucked away in the built-up area of Nieuwegein, it is part of the New Dutch Waterline. Initially, the fort was built by the French in 1672 as an entrenchment, composed of low earth ramparts.

Around 1853, the fort was reinforced with warehouses and group quarters in which the ramparts were also further raised and the fort moat was constructed. The fort served to defend sluices important for inundations. The fort has irregular bays. On the north and west sides is a high, wide rampart with steep slopes. The fort is surrounded by a wide moat.
