Off on an adventure with Tappo along the Roman Rhine

Celebrating 5 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Join Tappo on his journey and discover the story of the Limes, the border of the Roman Empire. In the ‘Tappo and the River’ exhibition, you can follow the adventure from the Golden Booklet of the same name through a series of colourful illustrations.

Tappo is sailing down the Rhine with his father. But this is no ordinary river. If Tappo listens carefully, he can hear the Rhine whispering. The river tells him stories from long ago, when Roman soldiers, traders and residents lived here and the Rhine formed the border of the vast Roman Empire.

Follow Tappo along the river and discover along the way what life was like almost 2,000 years ago. What happened along the border? What role did the river play? And what traces of the Romans can still be found today?

The exhibition is based on the ‘Golden Booklet: Tappo and the River’, written by Linda Dielemans and illustrated by Irene Goede. The booklet was published to mark the fifth anniversary of the Lower Germanic Limes being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Limes runs right through the Netherlands and largely follows the course of the ancient Rhine. Along this former border lie remarkable archaeological sites which, together, tell the story of the Roman era.

Come and have a look, follow Tappo and let the river tell you its stories too!

Curious to know where Tappo is heading? Keep an eye on the website for the venues where the exhibition will be on display from October onwards, as well as for fun extra activities centred around Tappo and the river.
