Travelling exhibition on the Limes and archaeology in the province of Utrecht
The province of Utrecht is home to numerous traces from the time the Romans were here, roughly from the first to the fourth century AD. Most of these can be found in the Limes, the area south of the Rhine that formed the border of the Roman Empire for over 300 years.
Five years ago, the Limes was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: an international recognition of our heritage. We are celebrating this with this exhibition.
In the Netherlands, the Limes stretched from Katwijk to Spijk, east of Nijmegen. At this exhibition, you can see Roman finds unearthed in the province of Utrecht. These include both everyday and extraordinary objects, ranging from wood to gold. They tell us more about the Roman Empire and the people of that time. Some of the finest finds are displayed as holograms, and there is also an augmented reality feature: a fragment of a Roman amphora grows into a complete jug from 2,000 years ago.
You’ll also learn all about archaeology, the science that studies the remains of ancient cultures. How do archaeologists work? How do they carry out their searches? How do they determine how old an object is? And what, in fact, is the purpose of archaeology?
We link finds to stories, graves to history, and research to insight. Welcome to the Limes, the border of the Roman Empire!
Please note: to visit the exhibition, you will need a standard admission ticket for Museum Dorestad.
