Chinese Paper Wallpaper - Oud Amelisweerd country house

The Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd with Koetshuis and park forest is one of the most special national monuments in the Netherlands. Mainly because of the Chinese paper wallpaper from the 18th century present. Moreover, the Landhuis is located in a beautiful nature reserve on the Kromme Rijn river. Residents of Utrecht and the surrounding area have long held the estates of Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen in their hearts.

The Landhuis was built around 1770 as a summer house, commissioned by Gerard Godard Taets van Amerongen and Anna Susanna Hasselear. They had a bridge built over the Kromme Rijn river and restructured the estate into the current park. The later history surrounding the various owners is too rich to summarise here in a few lines: from King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the Bosch van Drakestein family to Mrs Theodora De Wijs.

The layout, floors, doors and ceilings are unchanged since 1770. This originality, together with the unique 18th- and 19th-century Chinese and Dutch wallpaper still present, makes this house very special as a heritage property. Today, the wallpaper rooms are open to the public again. Guides are available to tell you more about the rich history and answer your questions.

From 2024 Moving Stories adds a new dimension to the historic building with both a visitor app and a home app, allowing you to experience the stories behind the unique hand-painted wallpapers. Upon entering, you scan a QR code with your own phone and embark on a journey of discovery.

On Thursdays at 11:30 am, you can join a (free) entry tour. Starts in the entrance hall.
