Exhibition Story of Woerden

What really makes Woerden Woerden? You will find out in the permanent exhibition Verhaal van Woerden. In the attic of the Stadsmuseum, you will take a journey through more than 2,000 years of history, from the Romans to modern Woerden.

The exhibition is built around nine themes, each linked to a unique character. They take you through their time and story. For instance, you will meet the Woerden artist Cornelis Vreedenburgh, the miller's wife Mabelia and Aunt Jo from the Moluccan community. With their personal perspectives, you experience how Woerden developed from army camp to fortified town and later to the lively municipality it is today.

Not only the city of Woerden, but also surrounding villages such as Harmelen, Kamerik and Zegveld are covered in detail. Discover how its location on the Rhine and on the border of Holland and Utrecht gave the town a key position. Experience how residents fought for faith, freedom and dry feet, and how people from far and wide coloured Woerden.
