The cycle route Langs Sluizen en Forten gives a great overview of the military heritage in Utrecht's backyard. The route takes you through the Kromme Rijn region and lets you discover the area around medieval Wijk bij Duurstede. The historical landscape of the Hollandse Waterlinie (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies) is particularly well preserved there and can still be experienced in abundance.
Be surprised by forts, trenches, dykes, sluices, canals, casemates and group shelters. Together, these elements formed an ingenious system that used to protect the Netherlands from enemy troops. Flooding the land by about 50 centimetres made it impassable for soldiers and too shallow for boats. The cycle route Langs Sluizen en Forten starts from Toeristisch Overstappunt (TOP) Stadshaven in Wijk bij Duurstede. Free parking and catering facilities are available here. You can also follow the cycle route in a shorter variant of 29 km and a long variant of 62 km. So get on your bike and experience the Dutch Waterline, the peace and nature in the outskirts of Utrecht.

This route follows the cycle junction network. Recognisable by the green and white signs with two numbers. The route starts at the Toeristisch Overstappunt (TOP): Wijk bij Duurstede's town harbour. From here, go to node 15 to pick up the nodes route. Another convenient starting location is TOP Eiland van Schalkwijk.
