On the trail of the Romans
The Roman Limespad is a beautiful walking route in the footsteps of the Romans. Some 2,000 years ago, a 200-kilometre-long border ran through the Netherlands with several Roman army camps, forts and watchtowers attached to it. The Latin word for border is 'Limes' and that Roman Limes can now be walked with the Long Distance Footpath: Roman Limespad. It runs from Katwijk - where the Rhine flowed into the sea at the time - along Oude Rijn, Kromme Rijn and Nederrijn to behind Nijmegen where the path crosses the border, towards Xanten.

The Roman Limespad is a beautiful walking route in the footsteps of the Romans. Some 2,000 years ago, a 200-kilometre-long border ran through the Netherlands with several Roman army camps, forts and watchtowers attached to it. The Latin word for border is 'Limes' and that Roman Limes can now be walked with the Long Distance Footpath: Roman Limespad. It runs from Katwijk - where the Rhine flowed into the sea at the time - along Oude Rijn, Kromme Rijn and Nederrijn to behind Nijmegen where the path crosses the border, towards Xanten.
In total, the Roman Limes path is 275 km long and divided into some 17 stages ranging from 10 km to 19 km. Stages 06 t/10 go (largely) through the province of Utrecht. This is stage 07 between Woerden and Utrecht. It goes to Harmelen and the giant new housing estate the Leidse Rijn to finish on the Daphne Schippers bridge in Utrecht.
