Sofie and the Dragons
This sculpture was specially made for the celebration of 750 years of Amersfoort and donated to the city by artist Jan Hinfelaar. Saint George and the dragon is an old legend, but well known in Amersfoort. According to this story, Sint Joris stood up for the people to free them from evil. Thanks to Saint George, a new era dawned, which the people could face without fear. The sculpture Sophie and the dragons brings this well-known legend to this time. Sofie, symbol of 750 years of Amersfoort, fights, just like Sint Joris, for liberation and development. The sculpture refers to our times, in which a powerful, new approach is needed to contemporary threats or 'dragons'.

During the celebration of Amersfoort 750, the sculpture stood near the special pavilion in the Oliemolenkwartier. For a permanent location, the choice was made for a spot with a quiet, green background, where the silhouette of Sofie and the dragons could be shown off to its best advantage. The sculpture stands as a kind of gatekeeper for the Water catchment area.
