Botanical Gardens Utrecht University
The lush Botanical Gardens are located on the edge of the Utrecht Science Park. Here you can hear the sound of gurgling water, birds singing and insects buzzing, and stand among literally thousands of plants with the most beautiful flowers.
The gardens are among the oldest university gardens in the Netherlands, located around the 19th-century Fort Hoofddijk. Throughout the year from 1 March to 1 December, there is plenty to do.
Almost 10,000 different plants
In the Gardens, you will find a very extensive collection of plants from all over the world. Immediately upon entering, you will notice the large Rock Garden, built on top of Fort Hoofddijk, part of the New Dutch Waterline, which dates back to the 19th century.
The Evolution Garden, where plants are arranged by families, is another striking feature that is a veritable sea of flowers in summer.

The Ontdektuin shows the role of plants in everyday life with sections such as edible crops, fibre and dye plants and, of course, medicinal plants. But you will also find information on pollination, inflorescences and flower shapes and other plant facts.
The Insect Meadow is the playground for butterflies, bees, bumblebees and dragonflies. In the small pond, frogs often croak and at the very back there is room for a completely harmless grass snake. Nearby, you will find Bird Hut the Garden Whistler where, invisible to birds, you can get a glimpse of the many species found in the Gardens. For children, fun and educational puzzle tours are available at the entrance. There is also a changing outdoor exhibition in the Insect Meadow.
Accessibility
This plant paradise is easily accessible from the city by public transport (tram 22 and bus 12, tram 22 does not run during weekends) and guarantees a (mid)day of wonderful enjoyment in the fresh outdoors. Coming by car? Then park at P+R Transferium Utrecht Science Park. On weekends, you can park for free in the car park opposite the Gardens. On weekdays, paid parking is available here.
Please note that the tropical greenhouses and butterfly greenhouse at Utrecht Botanical Gardens are closed for renovation and are expected to reopen in 2028. For up-to-date information, see: www.uu.nl/botanischetuinen
