The river landscape meets the Utrechtse Heuvelrug here. Country estates, extensive nature, fruit orchards, the Kromme Rijn, meadows, cultural history and the floodplains along the Lek; you will find it all within cycling distance of Utrecht. And cultural history is also plentiful here; the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Roman Limes traverse the Kromme Rijn and Lek region.
Spakenburg is a lively village, people go out and enjoy meeting each other in the centre. The museum harbour is the soul of Spakenburg. Its jewel: the old ship carpentry yard. The boatyard, the Red Shed, the botters, the old fishermen's cottages and the fish auction still breathe history at every turn. This picturesque setting gives you the feeling of walking through the living history of an old fishing village.
Utrecht is a city that inspires, is constantly on the move and is incredibly creative. Many of the city's stately castles have been converted into catering establishments, and the old warehouses along the wharf are now the setting for cosy cafés, hip shops and restaurants with world cuisines. But look a little further and you will notice that actually the whole of Utrecht is bursting with special places. You will find the thumping cultural heart of the city in TivoliVredenburg, drink the best coffee in town on the Voorstraat, go to the multicultural Lombok for all your exotic shopping, and the archaeological history of the city becomes very tangible in Castellum Hoge Woerd.
Like an oasis of calm, just outside the Randstad, between Utrecht and Amersfoort, you will find the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and Gelderse Vallei, with their beautiful nature, countless estates and lively towns and villages. Walk or cycle through the hilly forests past impressive castles, experience the many events and attractions or get culinary pampering in one of the nice restaurants.
