Fort Nieuwersluis

Between the meadows and the waters of the Vecht is Fort Nieuwersluis - a hidden gem with a rich history. Built in 1880 as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hollandse Waterlinies, the fort served as a strategic defensive structure between Utrecht and Amsterdam. Here, soldiers kept watch, ammunition depots were stored and the Netherlands was protected by water as an ally.

Today, the fort exudes tranquillity but still exudes character and history. With its sturdy walls, green roofs and atmospheric courtyards, Fort Nieuwersluis is a place where past and present come together. A unique location to discover, meet and enjoy. UNESCO World Heritage
Fort Nieuwersluis is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Committee decided on 26 July 2021 to grant the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie world heritage status. Together with the Stelling van Amsterdam, already listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, they form the Dutch Waterline.

Command post of the Protection of the Population
During the Cold War, Fort Nieuwersluis was set up as the command post of the Protection of the Population (BB). This was a civil protection organisation, manned by volunteers, that would alert the population in case of nuclear war or other calamities. Atomic-proof command posts were built all over the country. Here, volunteers practised alerting the population during an attack with nuclear, biological or chemical weapons. They also trained in directing assistance to victims.
