Bosscherwaarden brick factory
Along the Lower Rhine and Lek rivers between Rhenen and Vianen is a large number of brickworks. Most have long since ceased producing bricks, but around 1900 some 15 factories on either side of the river were in full production. Bosscherwaarden in Wijk bij Duurstede is one of the brickworks where the last brick was fired some time ago. Founded in 1923, the factory with its ring kiln and characteristic chimney is a protected national monument.
Restoration and renovation
The Utrechts Landschap Foundation owns the Bosscherwaarden brickworks, and in 2008-2009, the monumental ring furnace, the 40-metre-high chimney and a factory hall were renovated. A new reception area was also built, whose design refers to the drying sheds that stood here in the past.

Because of its location on the river Lek, the brickworks is ideally placed to inform people about the National Landscape Rivierenland. The site and the ring furnace are open to the public between sunrise and sunset.
