Asperen, a beautiful old town on the Linge river. The town is surrounded by a restored city wall, which can be seen from the Linge. You will recognise Asperen from afar by the tower of the beautiful Gothic church. This is also beautifully lit in the evening. Walking through the streets, you occasionally imagine yourself in the Middle Ages. Asperen is part of the Dutch Waterline. The nearby Fort Asperen (in Acquoy) is certainly worth a visit. The Zuider Lingesluis (1809) and the Noorder Lingesluis (1862) are part of the Diefdijklinie, the eastern dry flood defence in the dike ring of the Alblasserwaard and Vijfheerenlanden. The line should protect the lower western areas from Betuwe floodwater.
