Festival Tweetakt 2026

Festival Tweetakt is an annual Utrecht festival that introduces a wide audience to contemporary art for young people. The programme consists of theatre, dance, spoken word, performances, music, visual art, short films and installations. The performances and projects focus on all youth age groups, from toddlers to young adults, but also invite adults to experience how rich and layered youth art can be.

A special festival location is Fort Ruigenhoek. This historic fort island, part of the Hollandse Waterlinie and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is open to the public only during Tweetakt. On the island, the festival presents an extensive visual arts exhibition for children, combined with a continuous programme of performances and musical performances, both outdoors and in mobile theatres.

The artworks at Fort Ruigenhoek range from sculptures and kinetic objects to light art, installations and interventions in public space. They are created by young and experienced artists from home and abroad. In the semi-dark bunkers and in the nature of the island, the works are given their own context. Some artworks were developed especially for this site.

Tweetakt deliberately opts for a direct experience. There are no elaborate information boards; visitors discover the art using a map. In the mailroom, you can respond with a postcard to an artist. In addition, there is a scavenger hunt across the island, which also focuses on plants, animals and birds on the site.

Between the bunkers you will find catering terraces with old-fashioned family games such as giant jenga, a carousel and rideable plush animals. Children can wander around freely in nature, while art and games merge naturally. This makes Tweetakt at Fort Ruigenhoek a place where free play and visiting art come together.
